RAMS review checklist for construction work

1. Is the task actually defined?

• Is the exact work location and scope clear?
• Does the sequence run from arrival and setup through to completion and demobilisation?
• Are the people, plant, materials, access and interfaces identified?
• Does the method match the latest drawings, programme and site information?

2. Have the significant risks been understood?

The assessment should address the hazards that can realistically cause harm on this job, including risks created for workers, other contractors and the public. Generic hazard libraries can help prompt a review, but they cannot replace knowledge of the work.

• What can change during the activity?
• What isolations, permits, surveys or design information are prerequisites?
• Are temporary conditions and simultaneous operations covered?
• Have health risks such as dust, noise, vibration and hazardous substances been considered alongside immediate safety risks?

3. Are the controls credible?

Controls should follow the hierarchy and describe what will actually happen. Statements such as “wear PPE,” “take care” or “only trained operatives” rarely demonstrate enough on their own.

4. Can the team brief and supervise it?

• Are responsibilities allocated to identifiable roles?
• Are hold points, exclusion zones and stop-work triggers clear?
• Does the emergency response match the site and activity?
• Is there a clear review process after a change, incident or learning point?
